Philip Larkin

this is to be the first of what will hopefully be many posts that will lead to a poem i find to be particularly wonderful. the poet i've chosen to start with is one of my personal favorites and he is definitely one of the best poets to read. if you are interested in learning to write in a fixed meter without letting it outshine the content of the poem, Larkin's poetry is an excellent example. i also find his poetry particularly useful when it comes to doing imitations. the poem i picked is, i think, one of his best: it is called "church going." since i don't want to be banned for copyright infringement, i will simply post a link to the poem.

okay i'm going to go ahead and say that a lot of the poetry that people post on this website isn't terrific. it seems like a lot of the popular poetry is about suicide or angst or what have you. that being said, i may start posting some contemporary poets i admire who have made a name for themselves, but in these cases i will make it perfectly clear that their work is not mine and give them full credit for it. i find that one of the best ways to learn is through reading the poetry of accomplished poets and through attempted imitation. anyone have any thoughts on this?

thanks so much andres! i'll have to check out some of what you've posted; if what you left on diana's wall is any indication, i'm sure i will have a wonderful time reading your work.
You're good at writing, keep doing it.
